Four years ago Mr E requested his rep analyse his grass, forage and grain to try to get to the bottom of the problems he was encountering with his herd of Aberdeen Angus X's and flock of Cross Halfbred's and Texels despite already supplementing them with minerals.

These analysis' showed that there was a bigger problem on farm than first thought, so a mineral was formulated based on the results to balance the requirements of the stock. A programme was also implemented; All ewes are drenched twice a year, once pre-tupping and once pre-lambing, calves at weaning & those bought-in are also drenched to prevent a growth check and all dry cows are fed Easi-Calver (liquid feed) with cobalt option pre-calving, thus ensuring that their trace element & vitamin status is not compromised at these key times.

Winter feeding costs have also been reduced with adult cattle fed on silage and 5kg of a home mix containing home-grown cereals, Masterblend 65+Yeast & Crina. At harvesting, the grain is bruised and treated with Grainsave (grain additive). The youngstock are fed on Easi-Gain 40 (liquid feed) and silage with no expensive bought in cereals or compounds. They come through the winter brilliantly and 95% of all finished animals achieve top grades at the abbatoir, and they finish quicker and with a heavier deadweight meaning less time on-farm and improved margins.

Lambs are finished on Tub LF (Lamb Finisher), turnips and a small amount of compound feed 6 weeks prior to sale. Lambs always have a bloom and attain top price when sold!
